Apr 28 – City of Darwin calls for a Senate Inquiry

City of Darwin has written to Federal Ministers over the Lee Point housing project. The letter asks the Commonwealth Government consider:

  • a senate inquiry into the DHA Lee Point housing project, including considering Defence land at Berrimah as an alternative site, and
  • pause land clearing work at Lee Point while the inquiry is undertaken.

In the letter the council states, no government report is available to justify having defence housing located at Lee Point compared to other Darwin sites. There is no immediate need to provide housing lots at Lee Point given the many housing lots available closer to the defence bases.

The motion was moved by Councillor Julie Fraser, seconded by Councillor Edwin Joseph, and carried 7 to 5, refer 28 April 2026 City of Darwin Agenda and Minutes.

 

Lee Point land acqusition and zoning

DHA acquired Lyons North or 2CRU (Lot 4873) in May 2014 and Muirhead North (Lot 9370) in 2019. 2CRU was previously Commonwealth land.
