People at Parliament House midday Wednesday 31 July 2024
ABC 7.30 Report 30 July 2024 revealed that Defence Housing Australia (DHA) was being investigated at a Territory and Federal level because of alledged illegal clearing at Lee Point. The clearing happened in early May 2024.
The 7.30 Report prompted a press conference and follow up stories from Channel Nine, ABC local radio and NT News.
Dozens of people attended a press conference on the lawns of Parliament House to listen to speakers on Lee Point:
- Mililma May (Larrakia) – the destruction of country is the destruction of culture and Binybara needs to be protected.
- Lorraine Williams (Larrakia) – our people have been fighting for Lee Point/Binybara for over 50 years and wants Lee Point protected.
- Emma Fitzsimons (Lee Point defender) – wants to see the same scrutiny applied to DHA that was applied to the people that were arrested at Lee Point.
- Ian Redmond (Friends of Lee Point) – believed that DHA had not done the right thing by the Darwin community or the taxpayer generally and called for an inquiry into DHA.
- Kirsty Howard (ECNT) – called on Minister Tanya Plibersek to revoke the permit and step up and Save Lee Point.
