Nov 12 – Lee Point Public Forum

Over 30 people, including councillors Julie Fraser and Patrik Ralph,  attended the Lee Point Public Forum. It was held 5.30pm Wed 12 Nov in the Casuarina Library Meeting Room.

Fig 1. People listening to Graeme Sawyer at the forum

Graeme Sawyer believed that a business case would not stack up for housing people at Lee Point. Council should refuse to accept municipal assets at Lee Point because it is not in the best interests of the Darwin ratepayers.

Some of the key points that came from the forum were:

  • The council needs to become more involved in urban planning
  • Councillors need to listen to community and try to meet their needs and wishes.
  • Keeping natural habitats, particularly old growth forests, is important for the well-being of the community.
  • Community members need to let their councillors know how they feel about the Lee Point housing project.

The audience was invited to vote online (using phone) on these two motions (paraphrased here):

    1. Defence Housing Australia works be limited to Lee Point Stage 1A (area with houses on it) and alternative sites be selected.

    2. No environmental offsets be considered for defence housing work at Lee Point

Of the 24 people who responded, all supported the motions.

    Forum closed 7pm

Old growth forest at Lee Point

There are very few cities in the world that have a place like Lee Point on their doorstep. It makes Darwin special (Friends of Lee Point).

Do we need to house thousands of people at Lee Point and what are the options?

Housing thousands of people at Lee Point will change Lee Point forever. Councillor Julie Fraser is intending to move these motions (paraphrased here) at a future City of Darwin meeting to limit the impact on Lee Point:

      1. Defence Housing Australia works be limited to Lee Point Stage 1A (area with houses on it) and alternative sites be selected.
      2. No environmental offsets be considered for defence housing work at Lee Point

Previous survey response from City of Darwin candidates is HERE

The candidates were provided with this information: relocating and rescoping the Lee Point defence housing project.
